Home to world-class resorts and the scene of frequent celebrity (and celebutante) sightings, Cabo San Lucas is located on the southern tip of Baja and known for its luxe yet laid back atmosphere. Cabo weather is ideal for travelers who want to spend their vacations sunning themselves on the sand as this destination is situated in what could be called the dry tropics. Rain is scarce here, and the weather is sunny and relatively mild for most of the year. If that sounds like paradise, that’s because Cabo is about as close to it as you can get!
Why is Cabo weather so beautiful? The short answer is that Cabo’s tropical latitude paired with the effects of the surrounding ocean have led to a climate that is just about ideal for anyone who loves a little heat but hates humidity. The rainy season is short, the wintertime temperatures are mild and the springtime weather in Cabo is near perfect.
As noted above, the best time of year to visit for overall comfort is spring, when you’ll enjoy long stretches of gorgeous sunny days, blissfully warm waters and temperatures that are hot but not unbearable. The average temperature in Cabo is hotter in the summer and early autumn months when the highs hover around 90F and evenings don’t bring much of a reprieve since the lows are in the mid 70s. Winter temperatures in Cabo are extremely pleasant, with highs of around 80F and lows that might just have you reaching for a sweatshirt.
Overall, August is the hottest month, while the end of January and the start of February tends to be the coolest part of Cabo’s year. Of course, like anywhere else in Mexico, you will occasionally encounter unusually high highs and low lows or unseasonable temperatures, but in general Cabo weather is absolutely beautiful. And almost all year round, the water temperature is comfortably warm, though it’s warmest in July into early November. Swimming on cooler spring days can be particularly lovely.
When you look at Cabo weather by month as you plan your getaway, it’s good to remember that while it’s warm year round, there are seasonal variations in the temperature and weather conditions you should be aware of. Also, it’s worth noting that Cabo San Lucas is usually a bit hotter (and drier) than San Jose del Cabo.
December-April: The average temperatures in Cabo during these months range from the mid 70s into the mid 80s, and the pleasant temperatures attract tourists and later on, the spring break crowd. Rain is very rare during the winter and you’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine, though it’s not unusual for clouds to blanket the sky for some of the day. Don’t forget to pack a light sweater because desert evenings can get a little chilly!
May-June: You can score some of the best discounts in Cabo’s short springtime even though the spring weather is lovely with high temperatures in the mid 80s that make swimming a real treat. May is extremely dry, and chances are good that you won’t see a single cloud during your vacation. The best part? Evenings start to warm up during this part of the year, which means you can leave the sweatshirt at your hotel when you enjoy nighttime outings.
July-September: Expect a little bit of rain to fall when you visit Cabo in the summer months, and know that the chances a hurricane will visit this destination while you do are slightly higher. The heat is also more intense in the summertime, cloudy days more frequent and Cabo’s usual dry climate starts to feel surprisingly muggy. That said, remember that the amount of rain Cabo actually gets each year is negligible (don’t expect heavy downpours) and the less than ideal weather leads many hotels to offer deals.
October-November: The weather is still a bit hot and muggy as Cabo prepares for its peak season, which means some travelers end up paying high season prices for low season conditions. The good news is that showers become increasingly unlikely as you move from October into November, and the likelihood that you’ll have more sunny days than cloudy ones goes up!
Find out which season you will enjoy your visit to Cabo in the most.
Technically summer is the Cabo rainy season but most of this destination’s sparse rainfall hits in August and September. The annual rainfall in Cabo is actually less than seven inches, and most of that can come down during just a few storms. Some visitors are surprised by how little rainfall they encounter during the so-called Cabo rainy season, but it’s important to remember that average rainfall numbers can be misleading. One year with a big storm after many years of very dry conditions can skew the numbers in a big way. That said, April and May tend to be the driest months, and travelers who visit Cabo in springtime may encounter almost no rain at all.
